Genesis 2:1 - Thus the heavens and the earth were FINISHED, and all the host of them.
And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he RESTED on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had RESTED from all his work which God created and made.
John 19:30 - When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, IT IS FINISHED: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
Matthew 11:28 - Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you REST.
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find REST unto your souls.
Hebrews 4:3 - For we which have believed do enter into REST, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were FINISHED from the foundation of the world.
For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did REST the seventh day from all his works.
For he that is entered into his REST, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
Romans 4:4 - Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
God created the world in 6 days and then He rested on the 7th day. He did this and commanded His people to do this in the old testament to foreshadow/show a type of what Jesus would do for us on the cross.
We all know what Jesus did for us, He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, took our sins upon Himself, shed His blood on the cross and died for our sins, then rose from the grave. Well, on the cross He cried out, "IT IS FINISHED!" and that meant that His work was finished. He did all He needed to do for us to be saved/jusified before God.
Now by believing in Jesus and His finished work we can enter into His rest, we can stop trying to earn our way into Heaven, which is impossible to do anyway, and we can rest assured knowing that through faith in Jesus Christ and His finished work we are justified before God.
Now Jesus says, "Come unto me, all ye that labour [trying to earn your way into Heaven] and are heavy laden [still burdened by your sins and the guilt and shame of them], and I will give you REST [assurance that your are justified before God through faith in Me]. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find REST unto your souls."
The work is done.
You can't add anything to the finished work of Christ.
Simply believe and rest.
The other type/foreshadowing that I want to bring out is the analogy Paul uses in Hebrews chapter 4. Ok, so the first thing you need to know is that the book of Hebrews was written to, you guessed it, the Hebrews.
In chapter 4 Paul starts talking about how some of the Israelites that came out of Egypt with Moses way back in the day did not enter Canaan Land but instead they died in the wildreness, and the reason they never entered the promise land is because of unbelief. After those unbelieving Israelites died in the wilderness, God used Joshua to lead the faith filled Israelites into the promise land.
Paul goes on to say that the physical Canaan Land that Joshua led them into wasn't the true rest, but the true rest that has been promised to the children of God is to rest in the finished works of Christ.
As Hebrews 4:3, 10 says, "For we which have believed do enter into REST... For he that is entered into his REST, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his."
Which goes directly with Romans 4:4 - "Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness."
Now let's look deeper into this Joshua/Canaan Land/Rest typology.
Joshua 24:13 - And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.
The children of Israel were about to move into Canaan (The promised land) and they were going to inherit the land, cities, vineyards and olive yards that the Canaanites had built. They were going to inherit the works of another. They didn't have to work once they got in because the work had already been done. All they had to do was rest.
In the same way, when we receive salvation (which is our spiritual Canaan Land) we inherit the works of another, the works of Christ. We receive His righteousness, His fulfillment of the law, His approval from the Father. We don't have to work to become righteous, we don't have to work to fulfil the law, we don't have to work to get the approval of the Father because Jesus has already done it for us!
When we put our faith in Christ, God looks down on us and see's Jesus, His beloved Son in whom He is WELL pleased! We don't have to work for something that's already been accomplished, the same way that the children of Israel didn't have to build cities because they were already built. When Jesus was on the cross He said, "It is finised!"
Now we can rest in Him, in His finished work. What's the purpose in working for something you could never attain anyway? We get everything we ever needed (salvation, justification, righteousness, holiness, favor) all by simple child like faith in the finished works of Christ. Put your faith in Jesus and His finished work, and then rest in Him!
Not because of what you do, but because of what Jesus did, you are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. Believe it, love it, live it!
"Beloved, if you were not already perfect you could never hope to attain to perfection, for creation was finished and called good when God rested." (W.C. Lanyon)
